Halloween Time Part 2

Figured that though Halloween is over I still needed to finish my posting about my Halloween decorations. Lets jump right into it.

I'll start out by saying I am sorry I don't have links for this one. I made this one from a combination of stuff from The Wood Connection & Crafty Wood Cutouts. I started by buying all the small arrows & stickers at Craft Wood Cutouts but then I realized I made the stupid mistake and almost had all of the arrows going the same direction. This would not due. So I went to The Wood Connection & bought the big arrows, the bats & moon & stickers and finished it off that way. I had to add a little spider on top. So here's how I did it:

  • Sand down each arrow & pic a paper you like.
    • WORD OF WARNING THAT I LEARNED THE HARD WAY!!! The stickers will not stick to a glitter paper, don't even try. Sucks. But that's just how it is.
  • Glue the paper onto the wood after tracing your lines & cutting out the pattern.
  • I got the sticker letters at each of the craft stores I told you about. I feel they were over priced ($2 for the small & $4-5 for the big) but hey, what cha going to do about it? The arrows were $2-5 each.
  • The stickers are cake to place on. just put it where you want it & the kind I had you just peel the top off and there they are in place with nothing left to do.
  • Then I simply hot glued the arrows onto the stick.
Pretty simple right?? I figured out after the fact this craft was kind of pricey to make (ended up spending about $60 after buying all the wood, paint, stickers, paper, etc.) But I loved it regardless.

Sorry there is no link for this one either. But I got it at The Wood Connection for about $12. It came with the nose, star & moon, I had to buy the ribbon, wire & jewels for the eyes separately.

How I made this:

  • This one did not take long to make. I painted the whole thing black (the cat comes all glued together, I didn't have to piece anything together)
  • Once the cat was painted black and dried I sanded the edges to give it a worn look.
  • I painted the moon a mustard yellow & used black wire to wrap around the moon.
  • You can't really tell from the picture but I painted the star gold & then overlapped it with a gold glitter paint. In retrospect I wish I would've just used glitter because I wasn't a big fan of the glitter paint.
  • Then I had some orange ribbon and made a bow around the neck & tied the moon onto the tail with some ribbon as well
  • I used black jewels found in the scrapbooking section at Michael's (or you can buy it at the wood store for a very hefty price) and stuck them on
  • The nose got to be a bit tricky. I used black wire for the whiskers and hot glued them on. I don't know if they fell off over time or my pets thought it was a chew toy for them since I had the cat sitting on the ground but they were long gone after a few weeks.
  • I wrapped some black wire around the star & hot glued the star onto the kitty.

I'm not very happy with how these turned out. I am not sure what I did wrong... ok... maybe I do. But I'll explain how to do these and where I think I could've done better

  • I used ping pong balls to make these. I bought a box of 30 at Walmart for about $15.
  • They have a logo on them. I tried to paint over the logo with the red. It covered up OK but in hindsight I think I would've rather put the iris over the logo & paint the opposite side red.
  • I tried to use thread at first for the blood shot part of the eye. This was a NIGHTMARE!!!! The person who originally made these used yarn pieces... maybe that would've worked a lot better
  • Anyways... I glued the thread (or better to use yarn) on with clear nail polish. Now this is where I think I messed up too. Me being too cheap bout the crappy $0.99 wet n' wild nail polish. I didn't get that kick butt gloss to the eyes that I was hoping for. Maybe to get the gloss you need better nail polish.
  • But I printed out the iris from this website http://www.hauntershangout.com/home/easyeyes.asp  and glued them on with using the nail polish. I liked the crinkles in the eyes from the nail polish though. Made them look more realistic.
  • After doing about 20 of these which would take insane amounts of time I took a red marker & started drawing on the blood shot part. Looked just as good honestly. Not as good as the other bloggers. But good enough.
  • Word of advice again, I used shot glasses as stands to let the red paint dry on the eyes and while the nail polish was gluing. If I didn't use stands the eyes would roll every where and make and even bigger mess.

These are some ceramics I made years ago. I wish I could find the ceramic store where I got all of these but can't.  So no link. But if you happen to know of a ceramic store in Utah will you please message me & let me know?!!?

  • This one I bought 4 squares from Walmart for $0.98 each & painted them black, green, white & orange.
  • I used a sharpie to draw on them. I simply free handed everything except on the Frankenstein I used the googly eyes instead which made me like him the most.
  • On the spider I used black pipe cleaner for the legs & hot glued them on.
  • I used an orange ribbon and hot glued each piece onto the ribbon.

That's pretty much most of my Halloween crafts. It's now thanksgiving time and will soon get working on all my Turkey's and other fun thanksgiving stuff. But let's be honest. There's not as much fun Thanksgiving stuff as there is Halloween or Christmas.

Thanks for reading my blog and I hope I have given you some ideas of crafts to make.

Halloween Time (Part 1)

Ok, I had to get some pics up of my Halloween crafts. I will put links of where to get these and how to do them. Sorry there's not step by step pictures. But I had already made all of these before I started my blog. Let's get started.

This was by far one of the easiest and cutest crafts I made. I made a whole candy corn corner. I love it and it has easily became the focus point of my house. You can buy these online and have them shipped which is way helpful to those (like my sister) who don't live in Utah and have a bunch of cute wood stores close by.

How I made these:

  • Sand your wood. I used to not do this and once I started I found my crafts had a much better quality to them. You don't have to sand them but you'll use more paint and find that the little bits of saw dust left over will drive you crazy
  • These come in three pieces. I painted the top white, middle pumpkin orange and the bottom yellow. Each required two to three coats of paint. Let dry well in between each coat.
  • The picture doesn't really show the glitter but I have glitter on the whole thing. When you see them in person it really makes them stand out. I used just a clear standard glitter for the white & yellow part and had an orange glitter for the orange. This really added a lot of character. I had little jewels on each but because of the glitter they kept falling off. But they were the self adhesive kind. I think I just need to hot glue them on and they'll stick with no problem.
  • The ones like this at the store had ribbon on them. For some reason ribbon and I never get a long and liked the look without it. But try ribbon and see if it adds character to yours.
That's it! Cheap, easy, and cute candy corns that any Halloween addict needs in their home.

This is my little Halloween corner. I have it just on top of my wine rack and I absolutely love it. Unfortunately I don't have links to making these (except the candy corns that I already explained). But no worries. I will explain how to make each of these.

Let's start with the BOO sign:
  • Let me just start by saying everything you see here was very easy to make so I don't have to say it with each craft
  • At Michaels crafts I just bought 3 rectangle wood squares. They were framed which made it really easy. I painted the top & bottom squares with a solid black and the middle with a pumpkin orange.
  • Also at Michael's they had this awesome orange glitter paper. It was even on sale 10 for $10. I measured the size of the paper to fit in the square and used modge podge to glue it down. BEWARE: glitter will get everywhere so have something protecting your table.
  • The letters I also bought at Michael's for $2 a letter and painted them black and hot glued them onto the paper.
  • I took black ribbon and measured 2" in between each block and hot glued the ribbon all the way down the back.
  • The only thing I wish was different on this was a cute bow at the top but I've already explained I am not good with bows and ribbon so you won't see them often in my projects sadly. I need someone to teach me how to do those better!
Next is the candy corn bottles:
  • First things first. Please learn from my mistakes!!! WEAR GLOVES WHEN DOING THIS PROJECT!!!! This is by far the most important rule because I didn't and my best friend and I had a heck of a time trying to get the spray paint off our hands!
  • I have been saving all my wine/liquor bottles for crafts so that is what I used to spray paint. Though if you don't drink or have access to wine bottles I've seen cute bottles using things like soy sauce bottles, or vases/bottles bought at Walmart for only a few dollars. Or if you look closely you see I have some votive candle holders.
  • I used a white primer/paint can. I got it at Walmart for about $4. I sprayed the whole bottle. I let the bottle dry outside for about 15 minutes and then came back with the orange.
  • My best friend tried taping hers off and it didn't work out so well. But I personally liked the rough edges of just free handing the spray paint.
  • So go a little bit down from the white and hold the bottle a good distant away from you or else your spray paint will run. Spray paint the whole thing with the orange down to the bottom and let dry about another 15 minutes or so
  • Then use your yellow on the bottom to finish the candy corn look
  • I added rafia around the neck bottle to give it a fall feel
The Skulls were bottle of vodka once before. At the liquor store Dan Akroyd (of all people) has a line of liquor and this was by far my most favorite vodka of all time. The bottles just added to the amaizngness of this vodka but I had to save them. So they are both just old bottles of vodka.

At Walmart I bought the votive candle holders and put candy corn in them and an orange votive candle. Simple enough right?

The runner I bought at Pier 1 (one of my most favorite stores EVER). It was on sale for $19.00.

There are two different pumpkins. Ceramic and real

The ceramic pumpkins I made years ago. I am so sad because I can't find a ceramic store around anymore where I used to buy all my ceramics. So I sadly don't have a link for you to buy those.

The real pumpkins:
  • I bought a bag of 7 mini pumpkins from Walmart for $3.50. I put modge podge on the pumpkin and then added the glitter.
  • Have a piece of paper underneath your projects you use glitter on so that you can put the excess glitter back in the bottle. Sadly glitter isn't exactly cheap.

I LOVE my zombie sign!!!! I felt it was a little over priced from the wood store ($17.99- which isn't bad, but shipping was an additional $9) but I still think it was totally worth it!

I messed this one up a lot but I still love it regardless.
  • Again sad each of your letters
  • I painted each letter a different color. The Z was a deep purple, O was green, M was black, B was orange, and the E was yellow.
  • I bought a bunch of Halloween paper at the wood store for about $0.79 each paper. For those of you you don't have a wood store just go to Michael's.
  • I cut the paper to fit each letter and modge podged it on.
  • The Zombie took a lot of time to paint. I started off by painting the whole thing white. This took 2-3 coats of paint.
  • Then I took a pencil and outlined where I wanted his clothes to be. I then painted the shirt the deep purple and this required honestly about 5 coats of paint. Do not paint your pants until you have your shirt done first.
  • Once the shirt is dry then paint your pants. I used a green and this too required about 4 coats of paint to look good.
  • I then used a pencil to outline how I wanted his mouth to be and used a black sharpie marker to do the two dots for the nose & the mouth.
  • I tried to use the black sharpie marker to outline the clothes but this wasn't working well. The paint was just bunching up on the marker. It was probably because I am not patient and didn't wait for my paint to 100% dry. So I used a very fine paint brush and black paint to outline the clothes to define them more.
  • The zombie eyes came with the kit so I painted them white and used the back of one of my paint brushes dipped into red paint for the pupils.
  • Before I hot glued the eyes on I used a brush dipped in black paint and rubbed most of the paint out on a paper towel in clockwise turns and then where I was putting the eyes I added some black behind them to make them stand out more.
  • Once all this was done I took one of those black foam brushes (that cost like $0.25 each anywhere you go) and dipped it in black paint. Again I got a lot of the black paint out of the brush by using a paper towel then used the brush on the edges to give them a worn look.

The links below the picture will take you to the wood store here in Salt Lake (the Wood Connection) where I got both of these

Monster Sign:
  • This was $19.95 at the Wood Connection
  • I did not sand these letters, but should've. Again at times I get way too excited to get crafting that I skip steps. Bad Marie. Oh well... anyways. Back to the project.
  • I painted each letter a different color. Red, black, green, purple, blue, etc.
  • I used a pencil to outline the letters on the paper. Cut the letters out.
  • I used Modge Podge to glue to paper on
  • I bought the green boa at Michael's for $3-4. I hot glued the bits on the M, T, & R
  • The picture doesn't really show it but I then used black wire on the E. This wire is really pliable and easy to work with. I bought this stuff at the wood store for about $5 but I have also found gold, copper and other color as Michael's in the jewelry section. So check that out.
  • The black wire I wrapped around the letter and twisted it a couple of times. I then used a pencil and wrapped the wire around it to make it a cute little spiral.
  • To use the wire it is easiest using wire cutters, but scissors will certainly work as well if you don't have wire cutters.
  • The O has an eye on it. This all came with the kit. I painted the back white and added white glitter and the pupil black. I used hot glue to stick it on. Though wood glue would work just as good too.
Monsters:
  • The Wood Connection sells a 3 monster set, but I only wanted 2. They are $5.95 each.
  • I used craft paper I got at Michael's. I didn't like how busy the ones from the store looked with the busy paper. I used paper that was shiny and reflective for the blue monster and yellow glitter paper for the other one.
  • I painted them each their retrospective colors (yellow & blue) and then modge podged the paper on.
  • The monsters come with the eyes and mouths in the kits. I painted the yellow monsters mouth white and eye backs black, the eyes are those google eyes you can buy at any craft store (but they come in the kit too) and I hot glued them on.
  • They blue monster I painted the oval mouth piece white and the teeth that go over it black & hot glued them on. Then the eye the biggest circle I painted white, the next circle purple and the smallest black and then hot glued the googley eye on.
  • The wood store had the little hair that I added on. But you can find it at any fabric or craft store. I can't remember exactly how much I bought. I think a yard of each and I hot glued the hair on in two different rows.
  • I bought the black/white polka dot paper and glued it around all the sides of the stand and then glued white squiggly ribbon in the middle of it.
  • Lastly I took black tulle and did a bow.

I bought this at The Wood Connection but oddly they don't have it on their website. The shadow box was $12.95 and there are cutout for each month. The kit for all five I believe was $12.00.

The Pumpkin:
  • I painted the pumpkin orange and added green for the stem. This took 2-3 coats of paint. I then put modge podge on and added orange glitter to the whole thing. The eyes, nose & mouth comes with the kit.
  • I used the same yellow glitter paper that I used for the monster above and modge podged it onto the eyes, nose & mouth
  • I then used some of the black wire to go around the stem and spiraled it
The Ghost:
  • Paint 2-3 coats of white paint
  • Shockingly I didn't add glitter to this one (can you tell yet that I am glitter obsessed?)
  • I painted the star a blue glitter and had this thin yellow ribbon that I wrapped & tied around the star.
  • I used black jewels for the eyes. I bought these at Michael's last year so I can't remember how much they cost. But you can find them in the scrapbook section of the store.
  • I then hot glued the star onto the ghost
The Cat:
  • This one took 2-3 coats of black paint
  • For the eyes I used clear jewels for the eyes (again bought at Michael's)
  • The whiskers were made using the black wire & hot glued on and the nose was a black jewel
  • The moon was painted yellow and I used the same yellow paper that I used for the pumpkin & monster & glued it on
The Shoe:
  • I painted this one a deep purple which took 2 coats
  • the top part of the shoe is an extra piece that comes in the kit. I painted it white and used a white glitter paper and hot glued it onto the shoe
  • The star is a blue glitter and hot glued on
  • The ribbon is a peach color & wrapped around the shoe where it looks like it's laced.
The Candy Corn:
  • I painted the whole thing white then took a pencil & made marks for where I wanted my lines to be.
  • Painted the middle orange with about 2 coats of paint
  • Painted the bottom yellow with 2 coats of paint.
  • I then put modge podge on the whole candy corn & added the basic clear glitter
  • I finished it off with ribbon tied around it.

OK folks. I have more Halloween crafts to add, but honestly I need a break from explaining each one.

I hope that you guys had fun reading my descriptions and that some of you try to make these. If someone actually does I would love to see your finished product!

Thanks for reading my blog; which is a working progress. Let me know if you have any input!

I'm a little new at this

Hey everyone,

Ok, I will admit it.... I have become a Pinterest addict. The first step is admitting it right?!?! With the holidays coming up I just find there are so many cute things out there and I want to contribute to the fun world of Pinterest that I may as well start my own blog.

I have been loving the Halloween crafting season and I will admit I've been loving even more the compliments I keep getting on my crafts. According to my sister she was showing them off at work the other day which admittedly felt like it was a major score. When I craft (always with my bottle of wine next to me because it only adds to the fun), I find that there are a lot of "oh wow, that turned out better than I expected" or "oh no did I really just mess that up that badly? And how the heck am I going to fix it?" Yes, I mumble these things often with a lot of explicit words involved as well.

But I often get asked how I did things and I figured that I could do a blog just like all of those other amazing crafters (which I am not claiming to be) but I do enjoy getting things out there.

On top of crafting I am a bit obsessed with make up and get asked make up tips. Figured that I could review my favorite products and give tips too here. OK... I will admit it. I am OBVIOUSLY bored around here and needed something to do.

Now friends. Let me give you a word of warning. There most likely won't be cooking suggestions for I do not cook. For that I would refer you to talking to someone else for suggestions. If you need suggestions on shopping, crafts, decorating, makeup, or being totally awesome I am your gal. Anything in the kitchen other than how to make easy mac, I am not your gal. But I will experiment occasionally and can certainly give tips on what NOT to do!

Well anyways, let the fun start. I will have to take pictures of what I have been working on just so there is something showing up on my blog other than my dorky hello post that I am sure only I will see. Peace out friends.

My super awesome Pinterest boards... just in case you wanted to peek.
